After exhausting Second World War when the industry of auto production had a lack of fuel and materials, Japanese government established a law according to which people didn't have to pay any taxes for the cars which were not longer than 360 cm and fuel consumption less than 3.4 l per 100 km. Subaru 360 was the first auto which responded all these demands. It was only 3 m length and had a two-cylinder engine with 16 HP. In addition it had a modern design. Construction of the car was made using such materials as plastic and aluminum. It was a successful experience for the company and helped to get leading positions in the field of auto production.

After Subaru 360 hit the market it was the company decided to produce bigger and more powerful cars. This resulted in Subaru 1000. It was the first production car with front-wheel drive and four-cylinder engine with 55 HP. It was the starting point in history of opposed engines by Subaru. In addition this auto had an extraordinary but eye-catching design which was accepted by consumers at once. Later producers decide to export their cars to the USA and Europe.

Later such models as Subaru FF and Subaru Leone followed in 1971. The second car was the first auto in the world which had four-wheel drive system. It caused a huge interest from specialists as well as ordinary drivers. Due to this car Subaru managed to get high position in the field of four-wheel drive cars from other producers. And in 1972 another model Rex appeared on the market. It had 2-cylinder engine with 365 cc and water cooling. In 1974 Leone was becoming increasingly popular in Europe. Within two years more than 100 000 of autos were sold and 30 000 of them were sold in the USA.
In 1982 Subaru starts to produce cars with turbo charging engines. In 1983 Subaru Domingo was presented to the public. It was a four-wheel drive wagon followed by Justy in 1984. Later on a Tokyo auto show Subaru SVX, a first model by Subaru which belonged to a class gran turismo, was presented. It has such an up to date and stylish design that auto has numerous fans even nowadays.
During 1990-s a new period for Subaru started due to the fact that the company signed an agreement of cooperation with British company Prodrive. Together they decided to take part in different competitions and constructors started to create a descent auto for this purpose. At the same year Legacy won Safary Rally in class N. This was a starting point in fabulous sports career of Subaru.
